I think this is the relevant RFC: http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5335 Basically, I think that emacs is doing the right thing here. This isn't a notmuch issue at all. The headers have to be encoded this way for the MTAs. Your reader (ie. emacs) should be doing the translation for you. jamie.
