The rule is to look in XDG locations before inside database.path, and
those are (implicitely) defined in terms of $HOME. Still it sounds like
notmuch is getting confused by $HOME not being defined, and exiting
instead of carrying on to try the next possibility. I would be
interested in any error messages, but I'm guessing from your previous
post there isn't any.
