I modified notmuch-lib a while back to enable asynchronous polling in emacs.

I didn't like how emacs locked up to refresh notmuch. I additionally
preferred not to have the echo area messages when polling is done in
the background so that has been commented out.
Since it's been a long time I do not remember if I adapted this code
from another patch someone shared on this list.
I think the async polling and removal of messages should each be
converted into options.
