Placing the declaration in lib/notmuch-private.h seems to work just as well.
As long as declaring environ doesn't cause problems on other platforms, I
don't see why an ifdef would be necessary. As for the stylistic issue of where
to put the declaration: You know the code base a lot better than me, so your
intuition as to where it should go is probably correct.
