Thank you David, this resolved my issue.

I don't actually remember installing notmuch from MELPA, turns out it
was installed as a dependency for notmuch-bookmarks. There doesn't seem
to be a way to install notmuch-bookmarks from a package archive without
installing the lastest build of notmuch-emacs as well, so I've resorted
to just downloading notmuch-bookmarks.el and placing it in ~/.emacs.d.
