Currently Emacs uses this output format (though
id:"1341870162-17782-1-git-send-email-amdragon@mit.edu" aims to fix
this).  Also, I assume most scripted uses of notmuch use the text
format (probably not the --output=summary text format, but certainly
files, messages, and tags).
